Unique Ways to View the Foliage

Fall in the Western White Mountains is nothing short of magical. As the crisp mountain air sets in, our hillsides transform into a sea of fiery reds, golden yellows, and vibrant oranges. While scenic drives and hikes are always popular, there are plenty of unique ways to take in the foliage that will make your autumn adventure truly unforgettable.

Ride the Historic Mt. Washington Cog Railway

Step aboard the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world and journey to the summit of Mt. Washington, the tallest peak in the Northeast. As the train climbs above the treeline, you’ll be treated to panoramic views that stretch for miles, with rolling hills and valleys awash in brilliant fall color.

Scenic Views on the Granite State Scenic Railway

For a nostalgic leaf-peeping experience, hop aboard the Granite State Scenic Railway in Lincoln. This family-friendly train ride takes you along the Pemigewasset River and through the colorful mountain landscape. It’s a relaxing way to sit back, enjoy the ride, and soak in the vibrant fall scenery without having to navigate winding roads.

Soar on the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway

New Hampshire’s only aerial tramway offers a smooth 8-minute ride to the 4,080-foot summit of Cannon Mountain. On a clear day, you can see the patchwork of autumn leaves across the White Mountains, as well as views into Vermont, New York, and even Canada. Once at the top, enjoy short walking paths, an observation tower, and a café with a view. Sunday, October 26 marks the end of an era for Tram II. Join in the celebration of its 45 years of operations as they pave the way for Tram III!

Glide Above the Trees on the Loon Mountain Gondola

The scenic gondola at Loon Mountain Resort is the longest in New Hampshire and whisks you to the summit in just a few minutes. At the top, explore walking trails, a mountaintop playground, and the famous Glacial Caves, all framed by breathtaking fall foliage.

Pedal Into the Season with Loon Mountain Downhill Mountain Biking

For adventure-seekers, Loon’s bike park offers exciting downhill mountain biking trails with foliage views around every corner. From gentle scenic rides to adrenaline-pumping descents, this is a great way to immerse yourself in the colors of autumn while enjoying a little thrill.

Zip Through the Colors with Alpine Adventures

For thrill-seekers, there’s no better way to experience foliage season than soaring over the treetops with Alpine Adventures. Their zipline tours send you gliding across the canopy, surrounded by brilliant fall colors from a perspective you won’t find anywhere else.

Explore Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves or the Polar Caves Park

Take a journey through boardwalk trails and wooden stairways at Lost River Gorge, where towering cliffs and deep caves are surrounded by a kaleidoscope of autumn leaves. The contrast between the dark, mysterious boulder caves and the vibrant colors above creates a one-of-a-kind fall adventure.

Formed during the last Ice Age, the Polar Caves in Rumney offer a fascinating walk through granite passages and natural caverns. In fall, the park’s wooded setting bursts with color, creating a unique backdrop for exploring these natural wonders.
