Hidden Gems of the Western White Mountains

While the Western White Mountains are known for their iconic attractions like the Flume Gorge, Clark’s Bears, and Cannon Mountain, the region is also home to countless lesser-known treasures waiting to be explored. Whether you’re a frequent visitor or a first-timer, there’s always something new to uncover. In this post, we’re shining a light on some of the hidden gems that make this region truly unforgettable.

The Rocks

Located just north of Franconia Notch in Bethlehem, the historic Rocks Estate offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and unexpected intrigue. While it’s well-known for its Christmas trees and scenic trails, one of its most fascinating features lies inside the Carriage House—a tribute to the pioneering work of Frances Glessner Lee, the “mother of forensic science.” Lee, who spent much of her life at The Rocks, is renowned for creating meticulously detailed miniature crime scenes, used to train detectives in crime-solving. Visitors can explore a preserved example of her work, along with photographs and exhibits that highlight her groundbreaking contributions to forensic investigation.

The trails in the surrounding forest are home to peeks into history, numerous structures beautifully designed to explore, including the mysterious “school house” and the Maple Museum. In the spring and early summer the gardens and trails are bursting with flowers. Looking for a place in the fall that isn’t quite as busy? Owned by the Society for Protection of New Hampshire Forests, you can find the foliage of your dreams here. In the winter, there is of course the Christmas trees, but also excellent snowshoeing trails.

Kancamagus Collectables- Antique Car Museum

Chances are you have either been in or driven by Kancamagus Collectables on Route 112, but did you know in addition to the cute gift shop, there is a wonderful, FREE antique car museum hiding through a door in the back of the store? Check out a couple dozen vehicles ranging from a historic fire truck to Model T’s to streetrods. One of the cars is even rumored to be haunted… can you figure out which one?

Mountain Thrift & Coffee

This unique spot offers the ultimate thrift experience combined with a cozy coffee shop. At Mountain Thrift & Coffee enjoy a selection of handcrafted coffees and baked goods while you shop over 7,000 square feet of clothing, shoes, sporting goods, jewelry, books, and more! Known as one of the cleanest and most organized thrift stores in New Hampshire, this is a hidden gem not to be missed!

Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society

While the hours are limited, you can request an appointment to explore the Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society. Home to unique and cool relics local to the area, it is jam packed with hours of interesting finds. This is a vibrant cultural hub where individuals of all ages and backgrounds can engage with the past, foster a deeper understanding of local history, and cultivate a sense of pride and connection to the local communities.

New England Ski Museum- Franconia Branch

While many people make a point of riding the tram to the summit of Cannon Mountain, don’t miss the New England Ski Museum, tucked to the side of the tramway building. This small building holds big history! The permanent exhibit presents a timeline of the development of skiing from its prehistoric roots up until the advent of the shaped ski in the 1990s, and includes local aspects of ski history with national implications such as several important ‘firsts’ at Cannon Mountain, and the career of area native Bode Miller.

J. E. Henry Trail

This lovely out and back trail begins at Loon’s South Peak, it follows the Pemigewasset River and is an easy, family friendly walk. Not quite as popular as some of the other local trails, it is easily overlooked!
