Loon Mountain Resort: The Heart of Lincoln

Love for Loon
Lincoln has a rich history as a logging town but has since transformed into a vibrant destination, thanks largely to Loon Mountain Resort. Development of the ski area began in the 1960s, and it now spans over 400 acres. However, skiing is just one of the many attractions the mountain offers—it’s also a popular spot for mountaintop weddings, mountain biking, dining, and more.

A Brief History of Loon Mountain Resort

Governor Sherman Adams left his role as Chief of Staff in President Eisenhower’s Cabinet in 1958 with a dream of returning to his roots and establishing a ski lodge. He went on to found the Loon Mountain Corporation, leading the construction of the ski area, which officially opened in 1965. Initially, the resort featured just 12 trails spanning 40 acres, serviced by three lifts: a four-passenger gondola and two double chairs. As Loon’s popularity grew, so did its terrain, trail count, and elevation. Today, Loon boasts 73 trails across 400 acres and 13 lifts. In 2021, it became the first ski resort in New England to install an eight-seat chairlift, the Kanc8. With three peaks, Loon Mountain has grown into the largest ski resort in New Hampshire.

Flight Path: 2030

“Flight Path: 2030 is a ten-year plan focused on transformative modern innovations across the resort to support Loon’s vision to Pioneer The New New England. Four pillars will guide these historically unprecedented capital investments over the next decade, which ultimately will establish Loon and the surrounding community as New England’s premier mountain destination” (loonmtn.com).

These four pillars focus on enhancing the ski experience, delivering excellence year-round, fostering community connections, and promoting responsible, sustainable growth. The plan aims to modernize and transform every aspect of the mountain, from base facilities to snowmaking, setting the stage for an unparalleled skiing experience. While mountain biking is already a staple at Loon from spring to fall, it will also see significant improvements, including new trails, expanded rental options, and additional classes.

Beyond Biking

Mountain biking is just one of the many activities available at Loon during the warmer months. The gondola operates year-round, offering access to scenic walking trails with breathtaking views and a unique area of boulder caves at the summit. Families and adventure enthusiasts alike enjoy the Ninja Wild course, zip-lining, and disc golf. The resort provides a fully inclusive experience with multiple dining options and lodging through the Mountain Club on Loon. Additionally, the mountain hosts numerous events throughout the year. Plan Your Visit!

Whether you’re planning a day trip or an extended stay, Loon is a destination for all seasons! The resort also offers event spaces for gatherings and is home to Loon Mountain Ministry, which hosts slopeside Sunday services. One of the highlights of this partnership is the unforgettable weddings. The church service area provides a truly unique experience, where guests can ride the gondola to the summit and celebrate with loved ones amidst breathtaking views—an extraordinary setting to say ‘I do’!
