The Basin is one of the most well-known, iconic attractions of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Located in Franconia Notch, The Basin has its own exits both north and south bound on I-93. A short walk on graded, wide paths brings you along side the Pemigewasset River. At the base of a small horsetail waterfall a large 20 foot wide pothole has been carved out of the granite. Mostly caused by the melting of the North American Ice Sheet, the rock formation has been smoothed by the action of water and small stones. Follow the path up stream and there are more cool rock formations and small waterfalls. The water is a stunning shade of turqoise. This natural attraction draws quite a crowd during the busy summer and fall months, but it is well worth the stop! The area also has many interpretive, informational signs that describe the history of the area and the geology.
